Since we first saw the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu play an amazing African drumming performance as part of his enthronement in 2005, we have had a secret ambition to meet him and perhaps play drums with him. That dream came true when we performed with the students from St. Michael’s C of E Secondary School. We were giving a welcome performance for the Archbishop who was visiting the school to view the plans and presentation for their new school. Half way through the piece we asked the Archbishop to come up and join in. After some pleading, he did indeed come up to join the drumming grooves! Everyone was thrilled to bits and he was brilliant at being able to pick up the beat at such short notice. As the beats got funkier, everybody in the audience clapped a pulse and there was a huge cheer at the end.
Archbishop John Sentamu, you have firmly sealed your status as the coolest Archbishop there ever was!
